Dear colleagues,

As you are all aware, in order to address the needs of many member FIUs and strengthen their capabilities during this emerging crisis, ECOFEL organised in June 2020 the COVID‑19 Virtual Roundtables for FIUs. These roundtables sought to:

  • Identify some of the key challenges affecting FIUs around the world, including both internal challenges (how this crisis may affect the operations of the FIU) and external challenges (tackling new types and patterns of criminal activity);
  • Enable FIUs to share their views with other FIUs where the crisis is still unfolding;
  • Explore in a preliminary manner the challenges and new environment that will emerge once the pandemic is over.

    Additionally, in order to enable FIUs to face the current challenges in the best possible way, ECOFEL conducted a broad review of the existing financial trends and associated guidance published by other organizations. A Best Practices Paper has been prepared in this regard, according to our current work plan.

    This paper benefited from very valuable inputs during the roundtables provided by many member FIUs from all regions. It highlights a range of options to assist FIUs in successfully adapting to the challenges brought on by the #COVID-19 pandemic. We would appreciate if you could make this document available to the personnel within your FIU.

    The paper will also be made available through ECOFEL’s e-Learning platform to the FIU community.
