**Letter to all IEWG members**
Dear IEWG members,
We trust you are well!
We would like to address you regarding the IEWG Conclusions from Large-Scale, Cross-Border ML Schemes project (the Laundromats). Following the decisions taken in Mauritius, the prject team (through the EGS) engaged with the Wolfsberg Group, asking for their assistance in testing the risk indicators that were developed within workstream 2 of the project. Unfortunately, the Wolfsberg Group informed that they wouldn’t help due to internal issues related to data privacy. Hence, there were two potential scenarios for the continuation of the project, namely:
The project team discussed the two options and concluded that option two would be much more beneficial as it allows the collection of more information and the involvement of the private sector. This involvement would additionally verify the usefulness of the risk indicators and their applicability and effectiveness on actual datasets. The feedback received would support the quality of the final product. Hence, the project team selected option 2.
This, however, would mean that the project timelines should be extended until January 2022, and the project should be included in the new IEWG Business Plan 2021-2022. The IEWG Rules on Internal Procedures are flexible in this regard and allow such prolongation.
Due to the increased quality of the final product and the overall usefulness, it is recommended to support the project team's decision. Unless you express your specific disagreement by Tuesday, May 18th, we will consider the suggested way ahead as approved.
