Dear Members of the Heads of FIU:
Attached you will find a letter from Director Kenneth A. Blanco dated October 20, 2020, about the security of the Egmont Secure Web (ESW). Director Blanco prepared this letter to address questions that FinCEN has received from other FIUs following the publication of press reports about unlawfully disclosed Suspicious Activity Reports, as well as other sensitive government documents, from several years ago.
As you may know, FinCEN is collaborating with an Egmont Committee (EC) Sub-group that is conducting a fact-finding review of the said unlawful disclosure of information. At the request of the Sub-group, FinCEN initially shared this letter in October with the Sub-group and not with the EC or the Heads of FIU. The Sub-group has now informed FinCEN that it does not oppose FinCEN’s dissemination of the attached letter to other Egmont FIUs. As the Sub-group’s fact-finding review is underway, however, the Sub-group takes no position at this time on the letter’s contents. FinCEN has shared Director Blanco’s letter with the EC and is now disseminating the letter to you.
