Dear Heads of Egmont Group FIUs,


We hope this message finds you well.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic which led to the cancellation of the physical meetings in most international organizations, the Egmont Group remained committed to its mission and opted to continue its important business through HoFIU webinars, virtual meetings of the working/regional groups and virtual operational training sessions in the place of formal, in-person meetings.

Live Webinars for the Egmont Group HoFIU:

On July 8th and 9th, the Egmont Group HoFIU will have the opportunity to have strategic discussions about FinTech, Virtual Assets, Virtual Assets Providers and Mobile Payment Services, through a series of live webinars organised under the coordination of the Interim EG Chair and the Egmont Committee. Four moderated webinars of 1.5 hours each will cover the following topics:

1.       Introduction to VAs and VASPs: terminology, AML/CFT regime vulnerabilities stemming from VAs, the revised FATF standards and their impact of the interactions with VASPs sector (starts on July 8th at 8:00 am EST)

2.       Operational aspects associated with VAs: blockchain or other technology analyses, information gaps, expertise requirements, IT tools, etc. (starts on July 8th at 10:00 am EST)

3.       Domestic and International Cooperation on ML/TF Cases Through VAs or VASPs: challenges and best practices (starts on July 9th at 8:00 am EST)

4.       Vulnerabilities of mobile payment services (MPS) to ML/TF: FIU challenges and best practices (starts on July 9th at 10:00 am EST)

Heads of FIU are invited to register for the live webinar series by completing the attached spreadsheet and returning it to the EGS via ESW at michelle.ouyang@egmont.org or via open email at michelle.ouyang@egmontsecretariat.org before Monday, 29 June (COB Ottawa). If the Head of FIU is not available, a suitable senior FIU representative should be designated by the Head of FIU to register. Please note that as per a regular meeting, only one representative, either a Head of FIU or suitably senior FIU representative, may participate in the live webinars.

Given the anticipated strategic and sensitive discussions around the topic, the Egmont Group Secretariat will provide detailed instructions on how to connect to the webinar platform only to the registered Heads of FIU or the suitable senior FIU representative designated by the Head of FIU.  

 

IEWG Virtual Meeting:

On July 6th at 7:00 am EST, IEWG will be organizing a virtual meeting to discuss various projects, updates and their upcoming 2020-2021 Business Plan. The IEWG Chair is inviting FIUs to designate up to two connections to join the upcoming virtual meeting. Please submit your registration to the Egmont Group Secretariat by using the same spreadsheet used for the live webinars (attached).

 

Regional Group Meetings

 

Asia and Pacific, Europe I, and West and Central Africa Regional Groups expressed interest in organizing virtual meetings for their members. The EGS is currently working with the respective Regional Representatives for scheduling appropriate time and date for these meetings. All communications regarding the meeting schedule and registration will be addressed regionally.

  

 

ECOFEL Virtual Operational Training Sessions:

From July 7th – 09th, the ECOFEL team will be organising several virtual operational training sessions on the following topics:

1.       The role of the FIUs in national ML/TF risk assessments: Lessons learned (July 7)

-          This training session will clarify the role of FIUs in National Risk Assessments and provide important information on successes, failures and lessons learned.

2.       COVID-19 – Best Practices for FIUs (July 8)

  • This training session will help FIUs to build knowledge and acquire a better understanding of the risks and challenges posed by COVID-19.

    Illegal Wildlife Trade as a Financial Crime (July 9)
  • This co-delivered training session by FATF and ECOFEL will help FIUs to better understand, identify and investigate financial flows related to Illegal Wildlife Trade.

 

Subject matter experts will answer every question you may have during these training sessions. 

 

The ECOFEL virtual operational training sessions will be accessible on the ECOFEL eLearning platform at 10:00 am EST for all FIU staff.
